Synopsis

During a poker game with gang members "Smoke" Turner, Stub Allen, Knuckles and Red, hot-headed Jimmy Peters accuses Smoke of cheating and shoots him. Although Smoke is only wounded, the leader of the gang, "Sloppy" Langford, a criminal masquerading as a prospector, decides to fake his murder to pressure Jimmy's father Pinto into selling his ranch. After Jimmy escapes from the posse sent to arrest him, Pinto summons his friend, Sam Benton, who is called "The Texas Hurricane." Out of friendship to Pinto, who acted as a father to him when he was young, Sam agrees to help Jimmy clear his name. Sam finds Jimmy, who claims that he only meant to wing Smoke, and convinces him to give himself up to Sheriff Caldwell, the father of his sweetheart Jane. On the way to town, Sam and Jimmy encounter the posse, but despite their demands, Sam refuses to surrender Jimmy to anyone except the sheriff. After he delivers Jimmy to the sheriff, Sam asks Pinto where Smoke's grave is located. His question is overheard by Langford, who dispatches some of his men to stop Sam from exploring the gravesite. Their actions confirm Sam's suspicions that the grave is empty. Later, Allen offers to set up evidence to clear Jimmy if Pinto will sell his ranch, and Pinto angrily throws him out. In the meantime, Caldwell receives a letter from a U.S. Marshal, warning him that Langford is a criminal and is trying to find a cache of stolen gold. Caldwell confronts Langford, who kills him to keep his identity a secret. Sam enters the sheriff's office shortly after the murder, and afraid that he or Jimmy might be blamed for the death, helps Jimmy escape from jail. They hide out together in a deserted mine and soon discover that the supposedly dead Smoke is also hiding there. They set a trap for him, but before he can expose the others, Langford kills him. Leaving Jimmy at the mine, Sam questions Pinto about his ranch and learns that the gang has taken over the property. Meanwhile, Jimmy goes off on his own and spots Knuckles digging up a trunk of buried gold on the ranch. He ties up the outlaw and rejoins Sam and Pinto. Led by Langford, the posse discovers them, and a shootout ensues. Jimmy, Sam and Pinto round up the gang. Some time later, Jimmy becomes the temporary sheriff, and he and Jane are reunited.
