Synopsis

Ben Shelby, a poor blacksmith, falls in love with Caroline Swayne; but her wealthy father, Robert Swayne, opposes the match and raises some question about the legitimacy of Ben's birth. Shortly after Ben attacks Swayne in response to the latter's remarks, Swayne is found murdered, and Ben is charged and jailed. He escapes, overhears Jim Leeson (Swayne's former horsebreeding partner) plot to sabotage Swayne's entry in a horserace, and wrings a confession to Swayne's murder out of Leeson's accomplice. The Swayne horse wins, and Caroline is set straight on the identity of Ben's father.
