Synopsis

After Mona Mainard, a popular Broadway actress, announces her engagement to John Norton, the Assistant District Attorney, Tommy, her brother and a former convict, vows to disappear and not soil her reputation. Through his manipulation of circumstantial evidence, Norton wins case after case and eventually is named the District Attorney. When "Big" Bill Ryan, a political boss, murders his mistress in her hotel suite, Tommy, a hotel employee, is arrested on circumstantial evidence. Although Tommy is booked under a false name, Mona sees his photograph in the newspaper and visits him in prison. Convinced of Tommy's innocence, Mona tries to persuade her husband to dismiss the case, but, bribed by Ryan with promises of political favors, Norton refuses. Desperate, Mona stages a fake poisoning and publicly accuses Norton of trying to kill her. Made humble by Mona's death throes, Norton offers to grant her any wish. At that point, Mona "recovers," reveals her ruse and transforms Norton. Ryan confesses to the crime and Tommy goes free.
