Synopsis

To pay for her sick mother's medical expenses, Ruth King, a country waitress, goes to the racetrack to bet. Dressed as a man, Ruth then visits a pool hall and, when caught in a raid, is taken to the police station. Edgar Lowe, a young lawyer, takes pity on the penniless girl and pays her fine. Fired from her job, Ruth seeks work in the city and meets up with Nellie, her sister, and Nellie's cardsharp associates, who see Ruth as the perfect gambling decoy to bring into their crooked operation. While canoeing with Jack Powers, one of the gamblers, Ruth falls into the water and is rescued by Edgar, whose bravery provokes jealousy in Powers. Later, during a poker game with Edgar, Ruth catches Powers cheating and exposes him, forcing a fight between the two men that ends with Ruth shooting Powers in the shoulder. Returned to virtue, Ruth sails away with her mother and Edgar on the Lowe family yacht.
