Synopsis

When ranger Jim Powers is late reporting in after a stagecoach robbery, his partner Jones collapses in the station doorway and reports that Powers has been shot down east of Sequoia. A rescue party, including rangers and Powers' friend, Lee Evans, sets out to find Powers and locates him in a cabin. As he dies, Powers tells the rangers that when they find a woman named Mitzi, they will find the killer. Powers then gives Lee his badge and instructs him to carry on. Lee, to whom Powers was like a father, is on criminal probation, but the captain of the rangers recruits him to find Powers' killer, and he heads out into the snow. Traveling north, Lee traces Mitzi's steps and learns she is a redhead, then finds her singing in a saloon in Pine Ledge. Lee poses as "Curly, the Kid," an infamous criminal who fled Arizona after a shootout with a marshal. Lee meets Mitzi and crooks Lucky and "Flash" Ryan, who vie for Mitzi's attention. Lucky then gets jealous of Lee and threatens to kill him, but Mitzi calls Lee her "royal flush." Two weeks pass and Lee tries to convince Lucky to join Mitzi and himself in ditching Ryan. The day the local miners get paid, Lee and Lucky hold them up after cheating them at cards and flee with Mitzi on dog sleds. En route to the border, they take refuge in a cabin, where Mitzy and Lee kiss for the first time. While the men are out hunting for food in the deep snows, Lucky falls down an embankment and hits his head and Lee must carry him back to the toppled sled. Noticing an orphanage cross with the inscription "Joe" on Lucky's neck, Lee realizes they are brothers. In a delirium, Lucky murmurs "I didn't do it," and when he wakes, Lee tells him who he really is and regretfully insists he bring Lucky in to the rangers. Ryan, meanwhile, catches up with them and Lucky takes a bullet for Lee. Lee shoots Ryan, who confesses to killing Powers and dies, then watches as Lucky dies, too. Later, the captain turns Mitzi over to the custody of ranger Lee Evans--for life.
