Synopsis
During a drunken spree, Ned Hampton, the son of a powerful cattleman, shoots and kills a rival sheepherder. Sheriff Tom Tracy is called in to apprehend the young killer, who is also the brother of Tom's sweetheart Molly. Although Ned admits he killed the sheepherder, he insists he shot in self-defense, an assertion Tom doubts from the evidence. Desperate to escape arrest, Ned shoots and wounds Tom and takes off on his horse. Although bleeding heavily, Tom captures Ned and holds him prisoner in a cabin until Ned's father John and a group of irate cattlemen surround the place. Seeing that Tom has grown weak from his wound, Ned knocks him out and escapes. Tom then flees from the cattlemen, who accuse him of taking the sheepmen's side and, after falling into unconsciousness, is carried by his horse to the Hampton ranch. When John and his men return empty-handed to the ranch, they notice Tom's horse there and begin a search. Molly hides Tom in her bed until he can safely escape and find refuge in the sheepmen's camp. While Tom recovers from his wound, Molly learns that her father is planning to drive his cattle herd through the sheepmen's territory, a move necessitated by a long drought that has been plaguing the area. Molly tries to dissuade her father from his plan, then rides to the sheepmen's camp to warn Tom. Apprised of John's intentions, the outraged sheepmen, led by Jim Green, decide to hold Molly captive. When Tom comes to Molly's defense, Jim orders him out of the camp and tells him that his sweetheart will be released only when Ned is apprehended. Tom returns to the Hampton ranch and tries to stop the cattle drive but is caught and imprisoned in an attic. Eventually, Tom escapes and captures Ned, then with his prisoner, rides to intercept the cattlemen before they cross the sheepmen's land. As Tom and Ned approach the cattle herd, Ned is accidentally shot by one of John's men and, with his dying breath, confesses to his father his guilt. In the ensuing commotion, the cattle begin to stampede, and Molly, who has escaped from the sheepmen's camp, finds herself in their path. Tom rescues Molly in the nick of time, and the lovers are happily reunited.
