Synopsis

Separated from his wife for many years, Joseph Greer learns that he is the father of a grown daughter, Beatrice. The girl comes to live with him, and he does not know what to do with her. Thinking that she should become a member of fashionable society, Greer sells an invention for the manufacture of linen to a group of dishonest financiers, hoping thereby to advance his position in society. Vi Williamson, the socialite wife of one of the crooked bankers, flirts with Greer, and he spurns her. Deeply offended, Vi convinces her husband that he should ruin Greer. Beatrice elopes with the chauffeur, and Greer is injured in an automobile accident. Broken in health and wealth, Greer goes to live in a poor quarter of the city, drinking himself into oblivion. The chauffeur remains loyal, however, and takes the old man into his home, offering him a place to continue his experiments. With renewed energy and confidence, Greer sets out to regain the high place he once held in the world of commerce.
