Synopsis

When railroad porter John Shand is caught reading in the Wylies' library, Alick offers to pay for Shand's education on the condition that he marry Maggie within 5 years. At the end of the period he is a Member of Commons and Maggie is his wife. Though it is Maggie's wit and judgment, typed into his speeches, which marks his fame, Shand falls in love with Lady Sybil. Unaware of the infatuation, Maggie arranges for them to visit a country estate. Shand prepares an unimpressive speech for a cabinet minister, but as rewritten by Maggie the speech is a success, and he realizes her devotion and the degree to which he owes her his position.
