Synopsis

Cesare Borgia, a Roman duke famous for his military conquests and for his power over women, has seized territories in all parts of Italy at the beginning of the 16th century. Caterina Sforza, who controls the fortress of Forlì, attempts to assassinate the duke in order to retain the independence of her territory. She gains the loyalty of the duke's most trusted lieutenant and directs him to have Borgia murdered, but Borgia uncovers the plot. In another attempt to eliminate her enemy, Caterina sends a beautiful woman named Genevieve to the duke's palace to romance and then poison him. Borgia's charm overcomes the young woman, however, and she drinks the poison herself to save his life. Borgia learns from the woman's dying confession that his lieutenant is conspiring to murder him. The lieutenant flees to Forlì, and the duke and his forces follow. They seize the fortress, and Borgia kills the traitor. When Caterina finally confronts Borgia, she agrees to return to Rome with the charming duke--not as a captive but as his guest.
