Synopsis

A young oboist follows a pretty girl in Moscow and is surprised when she fails to respond to his attempts at conversation. Intrigued, he follows her to a circus theater school; finally they meet, and he learns that she has been deaf and dumb since she was injured in an air raid at the age of three. Later, the boy invites the girl to a cafe and is filled with apprehension when a friend of his asks her to dance; but the girl, who is training to become an acrobatic dancer, observes the other couples and is soon completely at ease. The boy and girl grow close, their relationship enriched by the boy's sensitivity and the girl's highly developed senses of vision and touch. She attends a concert at which the boy is performing, and her desperate yearning to understand music causes a melody heard in childhood to well up in her mind, mingled with the sound of the wind and the air raid. Content, she watches the boy perform.
