Synopsis

Professor Illington, an aged Greek scholar, has named his daughter Damophilia, but she prefers "Phil" for short. After he dies, Phil goes to live with banker Donald MacWrath, who plans to marry her, and his old maid sister Eliza. Because they disapprove of her overalls and Greek dancing, Phil flees with an old friend of her father. Dressed as a boy, she encounters John Alden, a college Greek teacher who left his established Bostonian family when his sweetheart jilted him. As a girl, Phil works as an assistant Greek teacher, and as a boy, pursues her friendship with John, who now hates women. When the MacWraths come to retrieve her, Phil, dressed as a boy, hides in John's cabin. The next morning when the MacWraths find her, John marries her to save her reputation. Although he barely speaks to her, they go to Boston. After Phil makes John jealous by pretending to elope with a famous violinist, John realizes that his rage is founded in love.
