Synopsis

Larry Parker, a taxi driver, is the boyfriend of Mary O'Connor, whose father, Captain Tim, heads the fire department's "Suicide Squad." Larry's rival for Mary's affections is Ed Drake, a member of the squad. After Larry joins the squad, Ed arranges things so that Larry often misses dates with Mary. One time when Larry is left behind with the fire truck, he witnesses a bank robbery and pursues the criminals with the truck and finally captures them. Although his friend Snap's news photographs make Larry a public hero, he is berated within the department for abandoning his post. Mary is also displeased with his hasty actions, as she prefers a steady man like her father. When Larry again abandons his assignment to save people endangered by a hot wire, he is demoted, and Mickey, Mary's young brother, calls him a "grandstanding four-flusher." Ostracized by his fellow firemen, Larry finally quits when he once again acts on his own to rescue Ed. He returns to driving a taxi but sees an explosion on the ship that Mary and Mickey have just boarded. Rather than follow Tim's slow rescue methods, Larry takes a risk, cuts through the hull with an acetalyne torch and saves the passengers. Ed then tells Mary how Larry rescued him, and Tim gives Larry his fireman's hat and blesses his marriage to Mary.

Notes

A lengthy onscreen written preface dedicates the picture to the courage of the men who undertake the hazardous occupation of the rescue patrol in every city. In a news item announcing the start of production, Daily Variety refers to the film as Suicide Club; however, the item May have used that title in error as M-G-M was planning a film by that title in November 1935. The M-G-M film was released in 1936 as Trouble for Two.
