Synopsis

In order to shield her little daughter Pamela from her husband's brutality, Rose Baudin takes the girl to the home of her friends, M. and Mme. Brassard. Pamela is reared in the Brassard home and, when she reaches the age of sixteen, is betrothed to young Louis Brassard. The greedy Baron Gauntier blackmails his philandering relative Phillip and, with his purse full, visits Gaspard's inn. Unable to resist the Baron's 100,000 francs, Gaspard murders Gauntier, but Phillip is accused of the crime and sentenced to death. Knowing that Brassard will not allow Louis and Pamela to marry if Gaspard is revealed as a murderer, Rose keeps her silence. As Phillip is being led to the guillotine, however, Rose confesses the truth, and Phillip is saved. Meanwhile, the drunken Gaspard commits suicide.
