Synopsis
In 1898, wealthy American businessman Andrew Hardcastle lives in Russia with his twin daughters, Vivian and Dorothea. When the drunken Cossacks stage a pogrom against Jews and prominent persons, Hardcastle escapes to America with Vivian, believing Dorothea to be dead. Dorothea actually is adopted by a poor Jewish family, renamed Sonia, and at the age of nineteen, sent to America with her adopted brother Paul and also Sergius, to gain support for the revolutionary cause. Sonia and her comrades find Hardcastle's factory, with its blatant oppression of the workers, a ripe center for converts. Vivian, meanwhile, has grown up in wealth and luxury, and has fallen in love with her father's honest foreman, Tom Hardy. Sonia leads the enraged workers against Hardcastle from his factory to his mansion. At the steps of his home, however, Sonia denounces mob violence and sacrifices her own life for the life of Vivian, as she learns that she is really Vivian's sister.
