Synopsis

Polly Eccles, responsible for raising her sickly brother Billy Boy, decides to follow the doctor's orders, and so takes Billy away from the slums and heads for California. With only a poor sense of geography, Polly believes that they can make it on foot, but they are able to complete the trip after they are picked up by Kirk Drummond, who is driving cross-country. When they arrive, Kirk's father John is shocked that his son has spent so much time with a woman from the lower class, and after Polly gets a job, John sees to it that she is fired. Then, the workers at John's mine go on strike and seem determined to kill their employer. Polly rescues John, however, thus softening the once crusty old man considerably. He now admires Polly's courage and intelligence, and completely endorses the romance that develops between her and Kirk.
