Synopsis
While en route to his father's ranch in Wolf Bend, Texas, Tom Roarke escapes an ambush and meets Doc Onderdonk, who is deputy sheriff, justice of the peace, coroner and undertaker of Wolf Bend. Doc tells him that there is a range war going on between Tom's father Jess and rival rancher Buck O'Neill. Arriving at a shack, Tom finds the body of a Roarke cowpuncher who has been shot through the temple. Outside, Tom sees two riders engaged in a chase and, realizing one of them is a young woman, intercedes and knocks out the assailant, "Black Mike" Gonzado. The woman is Gloria O'Neill. When Roarke ranchhands arrive on the scene, eager to accuse Gloria of the killing, Tom fends them off, convinced that Gloria's younger brother Danny killed the cowpuncher. The ranchhands inform Tom of their suspicions that Lou Bolton, foreman of the Roarke ranch, is secretly in league with the O'Neills. When Tom arrives at the Roarke ranch, Bolton accuses him of aiding the enemy by befriending Gloria, and Tom's father orders him off their property. In the days that follow, Tom learns that Bolton has been scheming to deprive Jess of his water rights, and that "Black Mike" was the man who shot at him when he arrived in Wolf Bend and was also the cowpuncher's killer. After Bolton realizes he has been found out, he leads his riders against the O'Neills and takes Gloria and Danny as hostages. Tom volunteers to surrender himself to Bolton in exchange for the O'Neills' release, but once he is in Bolton's hands, Bolton reneges. In the back room of a cabin where Tom is being kept, Tom barricades the door and directs a gunfight against Bolton, which eventually he wins.
