Synopsis

In Paris Adela Baroni, a retired singer and actress of considerable fame, has converted her home into an actors' hostelry where thespians thrive, although a good many neglect to pay their bills. Living there is Dolores, an ambitious young actress who works in a cabaret owned by Monsieur Frappe, who is in love with her; and Anita, Lucia and Rosa, girls who also work at Frappe's nightclub. Roberto Ramos, a young writer and friend of Baroni's, is a frequent visitor to the house, where he tries to induce Baroni to return to the stage in a play that he has written. One day, he is reading the lines of a love passage when Virginia, Baroni's daughter, who has just returned from college, overhears him. They meet and fall in love, causing Lucia, who is also in love with Roberto, to become jealous. Frappe and Montel, friends of Roberto, are trying to convince the wealthy playboy Armando Conti to back Roberto's play, and to accomplish this, Montel shows Armando some photos of Dolores, which prompt him to offer half the required capital if Dolores appears in the play. When Dolores comes to Armando's apartment for an audition, he falls in love with her. Meanwhile, Lucia, in jealous despair, goes to Madame Baroni and tells her that Roberto has ruined the reputation of many girls. Extremely upset, Baroni orders Virginia to return to college, but she refuses and insists on entering the theater. To persuade her daughter to give up her theatrical aspirations, Baroni reveals her own sad story of an actress married to a writer. When Virginia persists in her ambitions, Baroni collapses and is rushed to the hospital for a blood tranfusion. All the girls volunteer their blood, but only Lucia's is acceptable, prompting the guilty Lucia to admit that she lied about Roberto. After leaving Baroni's bedside, the doctor tells Dolores that her blood test indicated that she is pregnant, and she rushes to Armando's apartment, where she finds him making love to another woman. A violent scene follows in which Dolores accidently fractures her arm. The accident prevents Dolores from appearing in the show, and Don Ernesto, who has been giving Virginia acting lessons, suggests that Virginia play Dolores' role. Baroni reacts to the news by disappearing from the hospital and soon after, Armando repents and begs for Dolores' forgiveness. Back at the theater, Don Ernesto finds Baroni in Virginia's dressing room where she realizes that she was unfair to Virginia and Roberto and agrees to play the part offered to her by Roberto, thus contributing to the success of the show.
