Synopsis

Struggling dramatist Edwin Rowley, hoping that he finally will be able to support his wife and son, sends his new play to theatrical manager Stephen Hunt. Recognizing it as a masterpiece, Stephen puts his own name on the play and is soon hailed as a genius. Then, when Edwin tells his already weak wife that his play has been stolen, the shock kills her, after which Edwin goes insane. Stephen hears that Edwin has committed suicide, and, feeling responsible, decides to care for his orphaned son and to give the playwright the credit he deserves. Years later, Edwin, who did not kill himself but merely wandered aimlessly, sees a poster with his name on it advertising his play, and he quickly comes back to his senses, after which he is reconciled with Stephen and belatedly enjoys the public adulation that is afforded a great author.
