Synopsis
At the outbreak of the Civil War, David Whiting, a Southerner, frees his slaves and fights for the Union, while Walker, his lookalike younger brother, joins the Confederate army. The entire community, including his family, views David's Northern sympathies as treasonous, so when he returns to his plantation after the war as the territorial governor, he receives an icy reception. Even after he pays off his family's huge debts and saves his sister Edith from the advances of the unscrupulous Thomas Spicer, David remains an outsider to the other Whitings, and any hopes he had of starting over with a new family vanish when his long-time sweetheart, Ruth Tyler, marries Walker.

Notes
The Sting of Victory was filmed in and around Chicago. According to a news item, the First Illinois National Guardsmen appeared in the film in battle scenes and were ordered on the last day of shooting to mobilize for duty on the Mexican frontier. Eight cameras were used during the battle scenes. It is unclear whether Robert P. Thompson was an assistant director or an actor.
