Synopsis
Multi-millionaire financier "Iron" Lloyd, disappointed in love, bitterly proclaims that he would give a million dollars to find a woman who would love him for himself. He sails to his birthplace, a small New England town, where incognito, he fights a laborer attacking Marie Grandon, who lives with her aunt and her aunt's two grandchildren. Marie helps the injured Lloyd, who spends an idyllic month with her. After Marie reads about the New York tenements that Lloyd owns, and condemns them, he arranges with his lawyer to give her a million dollars, presented as an inheritance, to test her convictions for reform. In New York, Marie lures financier Ogden Deneau, Lloyd's rival, who earlier had swindled Marie's aunt out of a fortune, to a roadhouse where Deneau's wife catches them embracing. The wife withdraws her fortune from Deneau's possession, and he is ruined. When Lloyd confesses his identity, Marie accuses him of using her as his plaything to ruin Deneau. Lloyd begins to leave, but Marie's dog leads him to her side, and they reconcile.
