Synopsis
Traveling to France on an ocean liner, Tarzan incurs the enmity of Rokoff when he catches the latter cheating at cards. Once in Paris, Rokoff joins forces with Clayton to lure Tarzan into a blackmail trap with the Countess Di Coude. Upon finding Tarzan in his wife's boudoir, the Count Di Coude challenges him to a duel. Surviving the match unscathed, Tarzan is requested by his friend D'Arnot to trail Rokoff and his gang to Africa. Embarking on the same ocean liner as his prey, Tarzan is recognized by Rokoff, thrown overboard, and drawn by the currents onto the jungle coastline where he reverts to his previous primitive life. One day, a yacht carrying his sweetheart, Jane Porter, is shipwrecked along the shore, and just as a lion is about to attack the girl, Tarzan rescues her and the couple are reunited.

Notes
This film took six months to shoot and several months to edit. It was filmed at a studio in Yonkers, NY, in Florida, and in Balboa and other parts of California. Gene Pollar was a well-known New York athlete according to news items. The film was originally to be nine reels in length. The L-KO lions appeared in the film. A special showing was given in Los Angeles on March 5, 1920, complimentary to author Edgar Rice Burroughs, who afterward expressed his approval of the film. The title was changed to The Revenge of Tarzan in July 1920 after its release because the original title, The Return of Tarzan, was misinterpreted by some people to mean that earlier Tarzan pictures were being re-issued.
