Synopsis

Disapproving of civilization, eccentric millionaire Eli Tupper picks out two unrelated orphans, calls them Adam and Eve, and puts them in a wilderness "Eden." Then, nineteen years later, Eli's sister, Mrs. Tupper-Bellamy, makes plans for her daughter Clarice to marry Seymour Purchwell, who agrees to the match only when he finds out that Eli has willed his fortune to Clarice. When Eli dies, however, the will stipulates that, in order to collect the money, Clarice must bring Adam and Eve into society. Determined to get Eli's millions, Purchwell finds Adam and Eve, and while the latter is soon delighted with modern civilization, the former wants to return to the forest. Seymour then tries to seduce Eve, after which she renounces the twentieth century and returns to her "Eden," where she is met by Adam, who has also found his way back. The couple then decide to spend the rest of their lives as far away as possible from the modern world.
