Synopsis

Pine Bluffs bank president John Martin is forced to close his doors because a robbery has depleted the bank's funds. When his daughter Julie promises the disgruntled citizens that the bank will open the next day, she reveals that John has gone to the city to borrow cash. Mayor Hill, who is the mastermind behind the robbery, orders his thug Pete to make sure that John does not return with the money. Pete and his gang first chase John and his friend, Fuzzy Q. Jones, to John's ranch house, then wait outside to ambush him should he try to leave. Although Fuzzy attempts to sidetrack the gang, they capture John as he is returning to the bank with $50,000, and steal the money. Later, Fuzzy sends for his friend, Billy the Kid, who arrives in time to save John from a lynch mob organized by Pete, who has spread a false rumor that John has been embezzling bank funds. Billy and Fuzzy then check county land records after John tells them that someone has been trying to force the ranchers to foreclose on their mortgages so that their pasture land can be bought. As they are leaving the county office, outlaw Bart, who has been hired by Hill, attempts to kill them, but Billy is quick on the trigger and kills Bart instead. Billy is arrested, but when the sheriff receives an endorsement of Billy from another sheriff, he releases him. His deputy Pete nevertheless swears out a warrant for John's arrest, and the sheriff is forced to take John to jail. After the sheriff finds bills on Bart's body that match the serial numbers from the stolen money, he accepts the deed from Fuzzy's land as bail, and releases John. Hill meets John riding home and suggests that he hide out in his line shack until the trial. Hoping to kill Billy and Fuzzy and prevent John from attending the trial, Hill then tells Julie that her father is in danger, and she sends Billy and Fuzzy to help him, unaware that they are being set up. Billy and Fuzzy are ambushed, and during the ensuing gunfight, Fuzzy falls into a puddle of oil. Billy deduces that the land robbers are after oil, and he and Fuzzy tie up their attackers and go to John's defense. After a fierce fight, they capture Pete and his gang, and when John reveals his conversation with Hill, they realize that Hill is behind the scheme. To confirm their suspicions, Billy and Fuzzy break into Hill's office and find John's money in his safe. Hill is then arrested, and later, Fuzzy, John, Julie and Billy celebrate their newfound wealth.
