Synopsis

John Gibbs, formerly a dock laborer, rises to wealth by shrewd speculation and marries Marie Van Dusen, who consents to the marriage only because her family require his money to maintain their social position. Reestablished in her former social circles, Mrs. Van Dusen continues to enjoy the luxury provided by her daughter's sacrifice. When Gibbs learns Valentine has not only taken Marie to a cabaret but has insulted her, he resolves to seek revenge by breaking Valentine on the market. But in doing so, Gibbs loses his own fortune. After his failure, Mrs. Van Dusen tries to persuade Marie to leave him, but she begins to realize her love for him and decides to remain.
