Synopsis
Edmund Kean, the great Shakespearean actor at the zenith of his popularity in London, is inspired by the Countess Koefeld. Among his devoted admirers is Anna Damby, whose guardian plans to force a marriage with Lord Melville, a roué. When Anna seeks Kean's aid, Melville's spy reports that she has eloped. Kean refutes the rumor at a reception given by the Koefelds and announces a benefit performance for a crippled child. Meanwhile, Melville lures Anna to an inn, but her kidnapers are thrashed by Kean, who happens on the scene. At the benefit performance, Kean--believing the Prince of Wales to be a rival for the countess' affections--begs the prince not to appear in the Koefeld box, but he ignores the request. Seeing the prince, a fit of madness overtakes Kean; he denounces the prince from the stage and is taken fainting to his dressing room, where he explains complications regarding the countess' presence in his chamber and apologizes to the prince. Ultimately he and Anna are united.
