Synopsis
Challenged for his lack of patriotism, idler Mark Quaintance joins the Secret Service just prior to America's entry into war with Germany. Commissioned to secure the list of German spies working in the United States, Quaintance is cautioned that no sacrifice is too great. Quaintance sets sail for Germany and is followed by Greta Glaum, one of the German spies delegated to stop him from obtaining the list. Greta soon finds herself in love with Quaintance, who is unaware of her mission, and her love prompts her to renounce Germany and help Quaintance locate the spy list. When he is surprised in the act of stealing the papers, Greta carries the list to the American ambassador. Eventually both spies are apprehended by the Germans and tortured in an attempt to make them divulge the whereabouts of the papers. Sentenced to death, they march together to the executioner.
