Synopsis

Sandra De Hault, a fair "soldier of fortune," arrives in Sacramento during the Gold Rush of 1849, after a sea voyage in which she adopted three children when their mother died. She is saved from a drunk by Stanton Halliday, an agent of eastern capitalist John Grey. They are attracted to each other, but believing that Grey's daughter, Lilian, is in love with Halliday and not wanting to ruin his career, Sandra gives Halliday up. She goes to Reading Flat and becomes a squatter. Halliday is sent to evict her but ends up rescuing her from the attentions of Dan Clehollis, a gambler. He is shot in the scuffle. Eventually, Halliday recovers and returns to rescue Sandra and her family from a flood.
