Synopsis

Successful author William Halowell Magee is engaged to Mary Norton, his publisher's daughter. The father threatens to break the engagement because Magee has failed to deliver the manuscript of a much publicized novel on time. Magee offers to complete the book within the next 24 hours and is offered the Baldpate Inn, a mountain resort owned by Bentley, his rival for Mary's hand, as a workshop. The caretaker gives him the only key to the inn, and he immediately sets to work. He is interrupted by Bland, who unlocks the door with his own key and hides $200,000 in the safe. In rapid succession, the hermit, Myra Thornhill, Cargan and Lou Max, and Mary Norton and Mrs. Rhodes enter the inn with their own keys. The crooks are after the money. Mary is there to warn Magee. He believes it all a frameup to prevent his finishing the novel in time. Finally, the sheriff arrives with the seventh key and arrests everyone. Magee escapes by a ruse and returns to his writing. Magee finishes the book and we realize that the action described is the novel he has just written. Mary arrives, and Magee assures her that they will be married tomorrow.
