Synopsis
Country girl Marilyn March, ridiculed because she has never had a sweetheart, leaves her Aunt Judith's home and moves to Washington at the outbreak of World War I. Marilyn is happy in her new government position but envies the women whose sweethearts and husbands are fighting overseas. When her friends ask for whom she is waiting, she claims that she secretly married war hero John Whitney Marshall on the day that he departed for France. To her surprise, John's mother accepts Marilyn as her daughter-in-law and takes her to the Marshall home, where she learns that John, possessed by a deep seated fear of firearms, is perfecting a deadly gas for the government, while the man he hired to take his place fights heroically in France. Marilyn considers notifying the draft board, but when she is attacked by a man who has threatened to blackmail her, John rushes to her rescue and is slightly wounded by a bullet. Cured of his phobia, John enlists, and Marilyn promises to marry him on his return.
