Synopsis
A young ingenue, just breaking into motion pictures, is hired by a producer for the role of the long-lost daughter of a woman played by veteran actress Mae Busch. Mae has breakfast with the younger actress, who shows interest in her collection of still photographs from earlier motion pictures that her friends have given her over the years. As Mae narrates the story of the 1924 Barbara Frietchie , a scene from that film, featuring Florence Vidor and Edmund Lowe, is shown. The women then hurry to finish breakfast and go off to the studio, where Mae shows her stills to some others. A scene from the 1924 film The Marriage Cheat , with Adolphe Menjou, Percy Marmont and Leatrice Joy, is then shown. As a scene in the present film is being shot, the ingenue and her leading man look at a still from the 1919 film The Busher , and scenes from that film, with Charles Ray, Colleen Moore and John Gilbert, are shown. The casting director telephones an actor named Tom to come to talk about a part in the film. Tom brings some stills of himself and accidentally also brings a still from the 1920 film The Rookie's Return . Scenes of that film, with Wallace Beery, Douglas MacLean and Doris May, are then shown. After the casting director tells Tom that Mae is collecting stills, Tom agrees to give his photograph to her, and he gets the part in the picture. Mae and the ingenue have lunch in an outdoor area of the studio and overhear three writers at a nearby table discuss a circus picture on which they are working. Their argument about a situation in the script reminds Mae of the 1923 film The Soul of the Beast , and as she shows them a still and tells its story, scenes of that film, with Madge Bellamy, Noah Beery and Cullen Landis, are shown. At a beauty parlor in the studio, Mae and the ingenue laugh at a still from the 1920 Hairpins , and scenes from that film, with Enid Bennett and Matt Moore, are shown. Later, at the premiere of the film, the ingenue is with the leading man, as a man speaks into a microphone and wishes the picture success.
