Synopsis

In the 1880's, at a fashionable Washington, D.C. reception, Senator Rivers, a newly elected member of Congress, meets Mabel Denman, the pretty daughter of Silas Denman whose claim has been making the rounds in the Capitol for forty years. Dedicating himself to her father's cause, which involves retribution for a boat Denman's father had given to the Patriots during the revolutionary war, Rivers attempts to woo Mabel, but she is infatuated with the elegant Count von Strahl of Austria. With the help of Mrs. Hilary, a sympathetic young widow, Rivers discovers that von Strahl is planning to elope with the Secretary of State's wife and successfully derails the illicit arrangement, exposing the Count's true nature to Mabel in the process. After a series of legislative maneuvers, Rivers then pushes through Denman's claim in the Senate, securing a permanent place in Mabel's heart.
