Synopsis

After being ambushed by Kip Ryerson, Alderson Cree makes his young son David promise to avenge his death once he has grown into manhood. David runs for help, and recanting, Cree instructs Mrs. Ryerson to release David from his promise. However, wanting to eliminate her brutal spouse, Mrs. Ryerson remains silent, and George Hedrick, the storekeeper, leads a crowd to drive Kip out of town and later announces his death so that David will not be forced to keep his vow. Years pass and David, now an adult, is engaged to Mary Reddin. Kip returns and David's mother attempts to force him to keep his promise. As David starts in pursuit of Ryerson, Mary meets his former wife, who confesses that David's father cancelled the promise of revenge. Mary rushes to inform David, but she is too late. A fight ensues between the two men, and Ryerson falls to his death from a mountain cliff, bringing to fruition the seeds of vengeance.
