Synopsis
Litovski, a Cossack general, stops at an inn and, inflamed by wine, attempts to rape the innkeeper's wife, Katherine, causing her to fall to her death. The innkeeper rushes at Litovski with a knife, and Litovski blinds him with a knout. Six years pass. The innkeeper's daughter, Vera, grows to womanhood and falls in love with violinist Paul Shilkiv, Litovski's illegitimate son. Vera attempts to kill Litovski, but Paul forestalls her. Litovski falls to his death, and Paul and Vera prepare to be wed.
