Synopsis

Following an unconventional romance in London, Peter Graham, a clergyman, returns to France as a chaplain. He soon abandons his calling and becomes a doctor, serving with the same unit as Julie, a nurse with whom he fell in love in London. The unit is later transfered to the South African front. When the war ends, Julie resumes her profession at a Cape Town hospital, and Peter finds work in the interior, working for Stenhouse, a dishonest trader. Stenhouse shoots Peter in a drunken rage, and Julie nurses him back to health. Peter returns to London and starts a mission. He meets a former love, Angelica, whom he finds pregnant and abandoned in the streets. Peter takes her in and asks her to marry him. Julie returns to London to assist Dr. Sampson at his hospital, and she helps deliver Angelica's baby. Angelica dies, and Peter and Julie decide that their happiness lies with each other.
