Synopsis

In Russia, Karin Dolokhof and her sweetheart, Prince Paul Alexis, belong to the illegal Russian League of Freedom, which seeks to improve the living conditions of the peasants. Before Karin and Paul can get married, the czar, motivated by political expediency, orders the prince to marry Princess Tanya. Paul balks at the demand, but then Karin tells him that the league might benefit from the marriage, and that they both must be willing to sacrifice personal happiness for the good of the people. Count Egor Strannik soon learns of Paul's involvement with the league, and convinces Tanya to betray her new husband to the czar. Then, during a confrontation between Egor and Tanya on one side and Paul and Karin on the other, the princess dies, after which, realizing that Russia is not yet ready for social revolution, Karin and Paul flee the country.

Notes

According to Motography March 25, 1916, costume designer Fedor Raskolnikoff had been "costumer to the Imperial Russian Court at Petrograd." Items in the Paramount studio records from 1941 credit Frank Reicher, not de Mille, with directtion, though the film's continuity and contemporary reviews credit de Mille.
