Synopsis

Captain Lenox, of the British army in India, and his wife die in a cholera plague, leaving their daughter Mary an orphan. Mary is sent to England to live with her appointed guardian Archibald Craven, a man who has become extremely bitter since the death of his wife. Archibald considers Mary a burden, especially since he already is saddled with a crippled son, Colin. Archibald goes to Egypt and leaves the children in the care of his brother Dr. Craven, who is the heir after Colin's death. Dr. Craven forces Colin to wear a heavy brace which saps his energy, but Mary removes the brace and brings Colin back to health. Dr. Craven tries to poison Colin, but Mary frustrates this plot as well. Mary also opens the secret garden that has been locked since the death of Colin's mother. Archibald returns and his faith in humanity is restored.
