Synopsis

Although Dr. Hugh Loring's most fervent desire is to have a child, his wife, a beautiful but coldhearted woman who enjoys flirting and gambling, is thoroughly opposed to the idea. Outraged when Hugh admonishes her for seeing another man, Mrs. Loring leaves him and returns to her old nurse, Mrs. Price, but not before confiding in Ruth Garden, Hugh's laboratory assistant, that she is pregnant. When the baby is due, Mrs. Loring calls Ruth to her bedside and exacts from her an oath of secrecy, thereby depriving Hugh of his greatest joy. Following Mrs. Loring's death, the baby is placed in Mrs. Price's care, and when the nurse is called back to Ireland three years later, Ruth agrees to take the child. Now in love with Ruth, Hugh says nothing, but his suspicion that she is an unwed mother prevents him from proposing. When the child becomes seriously ill, however, Hugh does his utmost to save him, whereupon Ruth reveals the truth and agrees to become the boy's mother.
