Synopsis

Following the death of her brutal husband, Zara Zenova departs for London with her little boy Mimo, intending to live with her wealthy uncle, Francis Markrute, who never knew of her marriage. Zara leaves her son at a boardinghouse and settles into Markrute's estate, where she meets Lord Tancred, an English nobleman who owes her uncle a large sum of money. To further his own social aspirations, Markrute forces Zara to marry Tancred, but she, believing that the Englishman has married her only to cancel his debts, insists that the marriage remain purely a business arrangement. One evening, Zara is called to the bedside of her child, who is dangerously ill. Tancred secretly follows her, and when he sees Mimo, whom he imagines is illegitimate, he sadly denounces the wife he had loved since their first meeting. After her son's death, however, Zara explains everything, and the two privately renew their marriage vows.
