Synopsis
This study of the Delaware Valley Mental Health Foundation at Doylestown, Pennsylvania, deals specifically with a handful of patients. There is a close examination of Foundation Director Dr. Albert M. Honig's method of treatment, known as "reality confrontation," by which a doctor will use any manner of physical or verbal prodding, from wrestling and hugging to screaming and bullying, to arouse the patient from his or her psychotic withdrawal. The patients live with their respective doctors in the therapists' homes as part of therapy. Therapy sessions are employed at the institution, and these sessions become, at times, highly demonstrative and violent. Dr. Honig claims no status as a miracle worker: one young boy appears headed toward a healthier state, but he suddenly reverts to former tendencies and commits suicide; Peter and Pat, two other patients, come very close to being cured of their mental disturbances.
