Synopsis

Rosa Brenner has always stayed in the background while her younger sister Rita received all the attention. As a result of being spoiled for years, Rita, after having an illegitimate child, is totally unprepared for the responsibilities that go with being a mother, and so Rosa takes care of the infant. The people in her home town shun Rosa because they believe her to be the mother, but she finally finds some happiness when she marries a millionaire. Then her husband begins an affair with Rita, and a despondent Rosa, hoping to get as far away from her sister as possible, goes to Europe and becomes a nurse at the front. Her humanitarianism causes her death, though, as the authorities stand her before a firing squad after she helps a homesick young soldier to desert.
