Synopsis

Betty, a plain, thrifty woman, is married to John Manners, a stockbroker who frequents the races. Because Betty's unglamorous demeanor no longer appeals to John, he starts to spend time with the stylish Mrs. Airlie, thus incurring Betty's jealousy and sparking a desire in her to dress more lavishly. She buys some expensive clothes just as John's investments begin to go bad, but soon is informed that she has inherited a fortune as well as a title. Betty keeps her new wealth a secret, but continues to spend so lavishly that John despairs and is forced to sell their only thing of value left, an estate out West. Preceding John to California, Betty is strolling through the grounds with the attentive Sir Harry Lovell when John and Mrs. Airlie arrive. John becomes jealous and later, in a struggle in Sir Harry's hotel room, John's revolver fires. Thinking that he has killed Sir Harry, John flees to Betty, who hides him, but eventually Sir Harry arrives, unharmed, and Betty and John are reconciled.
