Synopsis

A Russian girl (Mara) reared in a convent is engaged to marry a man (Col. Ivan Orloff) she does not love. Mara's aunt has arranged the marriage so as to reinforce her own social position, while Orloff intends to take over the family fortune. On the wedding night Mara runs away with Alexis Petroff, a captain in Ivan's regiment. Ivan, happily enough, believes Mara has died when reports of her overturned sleigh come to him. Later, though, rumors about Mara and Alexis inspire him to have Alexis court-martialed. Alexis is convicted of murdering Mara, but the accusation is dropped when Mara appears in the courtroom. To save himself from humiliation, Ivan suggests a duel with Alexis on the frozen river, hoping, in addition, to regain Mara's fortune. Alexis wins the duel by default when Ivan falls through the ice before the shooting begins, leaving Alexis and Mara to their winter wonderland.
