Synopsis

Concerned about the welfare of his motherless son Doug, John Caswell, a wealthy banker, ends his relationship with gold-digging adventuress Irene Gordon. After Irene is advised by the police to leave town, John marries Helen, a society woman. Years later, Doug, now a college student, returns home on a vacation and confesses to his father that he has fallen in love with a wonderful girl. John urges Doug to invite the girl to dinner, but is devastated when he discovers that she is Irene Gordon. In spite of John's attempts to "buy her off," Irene refuses to abandon Doug and tells her former lover that, as revenge for his earlier rejection, she is going to marry his son. To ruin Irene's plan, John confesses his past to Doug, whose initial disbelief eventually turns to rage. After swearing that he will either extract the truth from Irene or kill her, Doug goes to her apartment and is followed by John. When John arrives at Irene's, he finds her dead from a gunshot wound and immediately arranges the room to make her death appear to be a suicide. However, Mitchell, a police detective, suspects foul play and, after removing an earring from Irene's hand, investigates a sable coat that the gold digger recently had acquired. After Mitchell traces the coat to Doug, he questions the young man at the Caswell house. Nervous and frightened, Doug confesses to the crime but is contradicted by his father, who insists that he killed Irene. Convinced that John is lying, Mitchell searches the Caswell house and finds the mate to the murder scene earring in Helen's jewelry case. When questioned later, Helen suggests to Mitchell that the murderer may be a woman who, in an attempt to save her son's life, went to Irene's apartment to secure certain incriminating love letters and, while threatening the gold digger with a gun, struggled with her, causing the gun to fire unexpectedly. Mitchell declares Helen's version of the murder unlikely and concludes that Irene did, in fact, commit suicide. By placing both earrings on Helen's vanity before leaving the Caswell house, however, Mitchell reveals the real truth behind his conclusions.

Notes

According to modern sources, the running time of this film is 70 min. According to a studio publicity news item, art director Harrison Wiley created a "psychological set" for the film in which the living quarters of characters "John Caswell" and "Irene Gordon" were contrasted stylistically to underscore their contrasting personalities in the story. Publicity items also claim that fur coats worth $25,000 were used in the production.
