Synopsis

Well-known inventor Joffrey Brent hears a late-night intruder in his house soon after the village clock strikes one. Investigating, he gets into a struggle, and a body is seen falling to the floor. In the morning, his daughter, Dorothy, discovers him missing. Instead of calling the police she summons her aunt to stay the night. Dorothy falls asleep in the library and awakens when the clock again strikes once. She goes upstairs, and the grim intruder reappears. The next morning, the maids discover the corpse of a retired businessman from a distant city who has no apparent connection with Brent. Dorothy decides to spend the next night at her aunt's but returns with Niles Whitney, her sweetheart, in search of some wanted object. Finding a detective on guard, Niles goes off alone to a cigar store, not realizing that the detective is really the intruder in disguise. Upon his return, Niles discovers her unconscious. The police commissioner shows up with the father, and the intruder is revealed to be Stephen Ellis, an old "friend" who came to rob Brent, kidnaped him, and concealed him in an old country house. Ellis had returned to look for the combination to Brent's safe. Later Ellis is arrested and confesses everything.
