Synopsis

David Markley, crippled from birth, is a wealthy art student living in a small country village. When Ruth, the daughter of village blacksmith Luke Anderson, nears adulthood, David sends her away to be educated, then falls in love with her when she returns a polished young woman. They are about to marry when Ruth realizes that she loves Jim Dirk, a farmer's son, and breaks her engagement, changing David into a brokenhearted, embittered man. Luke, angered by and cursing his daughter's decision, is blinded by sparks from his anvil. Ruth marries Jim anyway, and they move to the city where he is killed while working in a tunnel. Left destitute and about to become a mother, Ruth returns to her village, is spurned by her father, and is about to commit suicide when David marries her to give the child a name, even though he no longer loves her. Ruth's baby Danny becomes the joy of David's life, but her attempts to regain David's love fail until her housekeeper suggests that she employ the power of "right thinking." By exercise of her will, Ruth summons David, who throws away his crutches and acknowledges his love. Her happiness is then made complete when Danny meets his blind grandfather and brings him home for a joyous reunion.
