Synopsis

Fanny Legrand, known as Sapho, struggles to escape from her drunken father and life of poverty. While selling flowers one day, her beauty is recognized by the great sculptor Caoudal who persuades her to become both his model and his mistress. Becoming accustomed to a life of luxury, Sapho soon deserts Caoudal for Dejoie the poet, and then deserts the poet for Flamant the engraver. Desiring to obtain ever greater luxuries for his mistress, Flamant commits forgery and is jailed for his crime. Sapho next meets Jean Gaussin, a young man from the provinces who is unaware of her reputation, and falls deeply in love with him. Their life is blissful until Jean learns of Sapho's past and leaves her to marry the innocent girl he had deserted for Sapho's charms. As Sapho witnesses the wedding ceremony of the two innocents, she resolves to put the past behind her and emerges from the church determined to start life over.
