Synopsis

Nicola Riccobini, a puppet master in New York's Italian quarter, is an energetic and domineering man in the family, in contrast to his dreamy, poetic cousin Bruno. Rosa (the wardrobe mistress), Sandro (the veteran handyman who worships Nicki), and Frank (a sinister betrayer of girls who plays the piano for puppet performances) constitute the group. Nicki falls in love with Angela, a wistful runaway, but is summoned to war before they can be married; he instructs Bruno to protect her from Frank while he is gone. When Nicki is reported dead, Bruno and Angela fall in love, though she is desired also by Frank. Nicki returns unexpectedly, deaf from shell shock, and the lovers plot in his presence to run away. Frank conspires to have Angela abducted, but Nicki intervenes; the shock of the experience cures his deafness. When Bruno struggles with Nicki, the theater catches on fire. Bruno's cowardice is revealed, and Angela is reunited with Nicki.
