So This Is Love

Gazing at a poster of pugilist "Spike" Mullins, Hilda Jensen admires him almost as much as Spike does himself. To sell tickets to the Boxer's Ball, Spike and his hooligans break the windows of any shop owner who doesn't purchase tickets. When Spike passes by the delicatessen in which Hilda works, she is smitten and believes he is too, although he is actually looking hungrily at a roast chicken. Spike orders Hilda to make a sandwich with everything on it, but Spike's manager keeps him on a diet to stay in shape for a coming prizefight. Across the street from the deli, Jerry McGuire works in a dress shop where his boss, "Maison" Katz, is forced by Spike to pay for two tickets to the Boxer's Ball. Katz convinces Jerry to buy the tickets and ask Hilda, whom he has loved silently for two years. During the dance, Spike breaks in on the couple, and dances Hilda into a private room. As she resists Spike's embraces, Jerry searches for her and finally finds her as she struggles with Spike. Spike punches Jerry and throws him into the gutter outside. Hilda follows Jerry as he returns to his studio apartment and puts a piece of raw meat on his black eye. Hilda is surprised and delighted to see the studio covered with drawings of her, and realizes that Jerry loves her. Just then, Spike breaks down the door, and after Jerry is thrown to the floor, Hilda leaves with him to prevent further violence. Soon, a neighbor, "Flash" Tracy, offers to make skinny Jerry the new boxing champ within a month. After training, Jerry returns to the deli to see Hilda, but cannot bring himself to fight when Spike strides in. Spike has scheduled a bout that night with Mauler McManus, but Mauler is injured at the last minute and unable to enter the ring. Flash arranges for Jerry to be Spike's substitute opponent, and the overconfident Spike laughs heartily. Jerry is still fearful, and Hilda is equally worried about the outcome. Before the fight, Spike is starved, as usual, and locks out his handlers, when Hilda brings a basketful of fattening food and helps Spike stuff himself. As the bout is ready to begin, Hilda tells Jerry to aim for Spike's stomach. At first, Jerry falls under Spike's punches, but manages to get in some blows while Hilda cheers him on. During the second round, Jerry gets the better of Spike, who finally goes down for the count. Hilda runs joyfully into the ring and embraces Jerry just as he is proclaimed the winner and collapses.
