Synopsis

Maurice Brachard leaves Thieves Alley, the rough neighborhood of his youth, to become a dock hand. Inspired by the Biblical story of Samson, Maurice goes on to become the financial giant of Paris through his dealings in Egyptian copper. The Marquis and Marquise D'Andolin, on the verge of financial ruin, convince their daughter Marie to marry Maurice, but although he adores his new wife, she despises his unpolished manner. Infatuated with the suave Jerome Govaine, who has also invested his fortune in copper, Marie agrees to meet him while Maurice is away, but Elise Vernette warns Maurice, and he meets his wife just as she is escaping from Jerome's attack. Seeking revenge, Maurice causes the copper market to topple, ruining both Jerome and himself in the process. As Maurice prepares to leave France forever, Marie realizes his worth and offers to accompany him.
