Synopsis

After her father's suicide, Jane Lee accepts a job as stenographer in the office of John Brock, the man who caused her father's destruction through crooked stock manipulations. When Jane resists Brock's amorous advances, he accuses her of rifling his safe and has her sent to prison. Upon her release, Jane is befriended by Governor Barnes and under his influence she devotes herself to social reform. However, she still harbors a grudge against Brock and so joins forces with Richard White, an artist who has also suffered at Brock's hands, for mutual revenge. Jane plays the siren and drives Brock to drink and ruination. Their task accomplished, White becomes depraved and attacks Bess Murphy, one of Jane's wards. Jane arrives, shoots and kills White, and Bess disappears while Jane is arrested, tried, and sentenced to death. Meanwhile the governor's son George, who Jane has rescued from the gutter, finds Bess and presents her story to his father who pardons Jane.
